#1 Hit the pool

That high you get after your swim? It’s all down to the body’s ‘happy hormones’, endorphins: chemicals produced by the brain during exercise that make us feel good – and best of all, they knock stress and anxiety out of the water.

What’s more, regular exercise has been shown to improve our body confidence levels and general emotional wellbeing too. So what are you waiting for? Race you to the pool!

#2 Make a gratitude list

When life gets fraught, it’s easy to dwell on the negatives. Instead, turn your mood around by getting some perspective.

Put pen to paper every day to write down five things you’re grateful for that day. It could be a blue, cloudless sky, the extra half an hour your children slept in, or the simple fact you have running water. Appreciating the positives can improve your happiness levels, so get writing!

#3 Start your own happiness challenge

According to the experts, not enough of us live in the moment and recognise the little things that make us happy. The challenge? Finding and documenting one thing every day that makes you feel happy, and sharing it on social media (such as Instagram) to spread the joy.

Like the gratitude list, the happiness challenge helps you to focus on the everyday experiences in life that make you feel happy.

#4 Enlist aromatherapy

Aromatherapy’s mood-boosting benefits have been long-documented, with the humble essential oil helping to relax, invigorate, uplift, de-stress and energise, depending on which you choose.

Incorporating them into your lifestyle is easy – you can add them to your bath, use them in an oil burner or include them into massage oils.

Tip: Make this relaxing ritual part of your bedtime beauty routine: Partly fill a sink with hot water and add a few drops of lavender essential oil. Soak a flannel in the water, hold it gently over your face and inhale as you use it to cleanse your skin.
